Xify HQ - eGPU with GTX 1070 and benchmarking

Hi people! So right now this is my second day with the V and I would like to share my first impressions with you. I don’t like writing long texts so I’ll try to make it short and sweet.

Unboxing:
I unboxed the tablet with my sister and it felt like it was christmas. We were really pleased with the unboxing experience. The box was in a crystal clean condition. They’ve put a “fragile” sticker on it so I guess they took good care of it. The bubble wrap and the boxes were all intact.

The tablet itself:
It felt alot heavier than I expected. Might be hard to use as tablet mode

Kickstand:
I was skeptical at first because it would go all the way down like the Surface Pro, but after trying it’s fair enough for me for note taking and drawing.

Screen:
Very good and sharp, nothing to say about it.

Battery:
I didn’t test it yet.

Pen:
The pen is acting wierd for me. The jitter is a little out of control, it jitters even with fast strokes. I tried the Surface Pro 4 pen and it was even worse. I recorded the issue at 240fps with my Google Pixel so you guys can see in depth

[ Gif about pen performance coming soon ]

Fingerprint sensor:
Hard to catch half of the time. I put my finger too low when I try to connect because there’s no way to tell where exactly the power button is. I’ll try to see if I can practice that

Speakers:
Not amazing, just okay.

Performance:
Pretty snappy when browsing the net. I’m using Microsoft Edge here. No plans to use Chrome or Firefox on it. I’ll leave those browsers for desktops. Anything CPU intensive feels slower but that’s okay. The processor had a really hard time keeping a stable clock speed and I think that’s why the M3 version performs much better than the i5 or i7

Notebookcheck quotes: “A glance at the sensors shows that with this modification, the CPU temperature immediately jumps to about 100 °C (212 °F), resulting in a reduction of the clock speed to 2.1 to 2.2 GHz.”

And that’s exactly what happened to me also. The clock speed goes down to 2.1Ghz and the temp immediately goes down to 73°C. I have to find a way for the processor to turbo boost up to a certain clock speed and maintain something like around 85°C, maximum 90°C under load instead of boost up and hitting 100°C within seconds. When this happened, my Cinebench test result for multi was only 213 points…

eGPU:
So far it’s amazing! I’ve tested one of the game I made in 6 weeks and I had an average of 100-130fps while playing. For comparison, I’ve tested the same build of the game on a Ryzen 7 1700x and a GTX 1060 and I had an average of 95-110fps.

Results for Contra Reboot ( student project )
Eve V with GTX 1070: 100-130fps
Ryzen 1700x with GTX 1060: 95-100fps
i7 3770k with GTX 560: 25-35fps
i7 4970k with GTX 760: 55-65fps
i7 4770 with GTX 960: 70-80fps
i7 4800MQ with Radeon m290x: 40-48fps

So far so good.

What I plan to test next during the weekend:

SOFTWARES

  • Cinebench r15 with proper CPU settings. (I will need help for this one)
  • Photoshop pen performance with and without eGPU
  • Substance Designer and Painter
  • Unreal Engine 4
  • Autodesk Maya and 3DS Max
  • Zbrush 4R8
  • [ Insert your request here ]

It’s not the same build if you take a different GPU.

Clean box where are you based l

I meant game build, like for example I used build v.0123 of the game to test. Same word but different definition. I’ll edit my post to avoid further confusion

@SteveYork Canada!

nice… how was zbrush without egpu? fine right?.. also rise of tomb raider?

On the Rise of TR I’m getting a stable 40+ minimum fps at ultra settings, 3440x1440. I imagine if you’re playing at 1080p on high or very high it’ll do much, much better.

Wow, that’s impressive! Keep testing whatever you can - this also gives you a great excuse to play video games all day!

Great write up, curious question though, why the insistence on Edge? last I remember, the battery life advantage was debunked, and my own experience is that edge takes longer to do what I want it to do compared to the chrome dev I’m using

and thanks for testing out all the things

Edge may not do as well on battery as other browsers (personally I get consistently mixed results, so I don’t believe the comparison tests), but it is pretty lightweight. The new firefox is a little bit more resource heavy, and chrome is definitely resource heavy.

@Xify I don’t get saving Chrome and Firefox for desktop only, the resource usage differences between them and edge are slight, and even the m3 V should be able to run either perfectly fine.

Do you have one of the recent Assassin’s Creed games like Origins or Syndicate?

thank you, Zbrush without egpu?

Can’t wait to see how the eGPU performs!!
Thank you for your immeasurable contributions to the community :small_red_triangle_down:
Hope an affordable eGPU solution enters the market someday xD

Incredible! waiting for numbers. Comparisons against desktop and dedicated built-in laptop gpus will be great info.

Run the Windows Mixed Reality Check, please!!! (run the App “mixed reality portal” already installed in win 10 on the V)

I’m not OP, sorry - just another dude with a V, eGPU and a bunch of games lol.

No, only AC i have is Black Flag which i got free like two days ago lol.

I know Rise of the Tomb Raider and Hitman have in game benchmarks, i’ll try and screencap them when i have time.

With a GTX1070 in my eGPU, everything so far has been at least decent - meaning at highest settings, if not 60fps avg, at least 40fps.

I play on a 3440x1440 monitor which isn’t the most common resolution - its about 5million pixels compared to 2milion on a 1080p monitor so keep that in mind and adjust upwards.

There’s definitely bottlenecking - but unless you’re in the OMG hArDcOrE RGB minimum 4k120 crowd, it shouldn’t hinder you from having a good time.

Here’s the result from the in-game benchmark in For Honor. There’s a momentary dip at the beginning that happens a lot - might be because its loaded off an USB 3.0 eternal SSD? Usually happens after loading a level.

edit: On 3/3/18, i received a badge for reaching 50 likes for the link to the For Honor benchmark!
…except i set that link to expire on 31/12/2017, lol! welp, here it is again.

To tell you the truth I thought it would be much worse when I saw that you were testing For Honor. But, now with Tomb Raider I can be a more confident about having my eGPU. Just need to get my video card to put in there. Probably will go with the 570, the 1060 just costs too much in China

Just remember that its not a Hard Core Gaming Device

Is it perhaps possible for you to test Pubg? greetings!

What would have been the result on desktop with same cpu and same resolution? Can you do that just for information?

I don’t have a desktop to make comparisons with.

What i can tell you is that based on my experience so far,

  • HQ CPU with TB3 eGPU: 15-20% performance loss compared to equivalent quad core desktop

  • U / Y CPU: 10-15% performance loss compared to HQ CPU.

  • i would expect the total performance hit on V + eGPU as compared to quad-core desktop + same GPU to be something like 25-30%

  • No significant performance differences between U and Y CPUs in terms of performance with eGPU, just that the U CPU feels a little bit zippier when it comes to load times.

That’s just a rough pattern i’ve been noticing for a while now - from when i was using an Asus Transformer 3 Pro and now with the V.
