Choppy Motion on Monitor?

Hello Dough Community,

I’ve been experiencing an issue with my monitor since I received it, its only recently that i’ve realised its the monitor that has been causing it. For the longest time i’ve been playing games and found that certain days they run better than others, I always assumed it was the developer who had made changes to make them run smoother, in retrospect i’ve realised that the issue was that the monitor isn’t actually rendering the frames correctly.

Issue goes something like this:

  • Game runs at say 140Fps
  • Refresh rate on monitor runs at 140hz (Free-sync is active / working )
  • Motion on monitor feels choppy like its running at 70hz
  • Moving windows on the desktop feels choppy.

Luckily its not a hard issue to resolve, so at the moment I will boot up my PC, open firefox and wiggle the application window from side to side, its pretty easy to see if the motion is choppy. If the motion looks choppy i will turn the monitor off for about 10 seconds and then turn it back on. This usually resolves the issue for the rest of my play session.

Sometimes loading factory settings fixes it.

With Firmware Version 108, there has been some improvement. Before this update i would usually have to load factory defaults to fix it. Motion clarity as a whole seems better on V108

My issue is somewhat similar to this.

Just curious if anyone else has had a similar experience

My setup is running

GPU: AMD Radeon 7900XTX
OS: Windows 11
Input: HDMI 2.1

Side note: Can’t currently disable VRR over HDMI as it causes screen blanking, and unable to use Display port with my 7900XTX as it has a really bad screen blanking issue. I do have a second system that is running a RX6800, which doesn’t have the display port blanking issue, so i will try that over the weekend.

LOL finally someone has the same problem i do! To confirm this try using UFO ghosting (type into google) and run it. You should see very choppy motion like i do. For me its instant. I plug my HDMI change refresh rates and/or play games for a bit and i notice its clearly not 144 hz anymore and looks far lower. The ports appear to be unstable.

Unfortunately they have no offered any RMA, return, refund or repairs to me at this time. I feel like they probably never will and you and I are just screwed like the rest of the people here.

Another thing i notice is that my refresh rate dips real quick from 144 to 125 (MONITOR FPS counter) and back again. Do you get that too? I only ever got that on AMD GPUs and never Nvidia.

haha you are not alone! My issue is noticeable from the first time I boot and then usually is fine once i have switched the monitor off / on. Leaving the monitor switched off for the day doesn’t seem to make any difference. The small reboots help though? If i get the screen blanking issue it causes the motion to be choppy till I restart the monitor

Yes Mine does this.

Yeah this makes me reluctant to purchase another monitor from Dough. I really like my monitor and was keen to get the OLED Model but i am super reluctant with this issue. Its a shame as when the motion is smooth, the monitor looks great.

I will try this! Its probably a better way than my current wiggle method.

Same pretty much. A reboot typically fixes it temporarily until it happens again. Whats the model of your GFX card? Mine is a 7900 XFX speedster merc 310. Going back tomorrow sadly.

Yeah no more Dough products for me until this is resolved.

Also report this issue if you haven’t and make sure you reference my post so they can understand that multiple people are having this issue. Perhaps between the two of us something can get done.

When you originally had the issue were you on an Nvidia card? I can’t use display port with this monitor because of the screen blanking issue over USB-C / Display Port Can use my RX6800 so might try this over the weekend.

I am running a Sapphire Reference 7900XTX

I noticed this as well. Even the mouse cursor movement is visibly choppy.

Usually changing the refresh rate and reverting the change is enough to fix it.

PS: Curiously, I also had to change from DP to HDMI with my 7900 XTX because of severe blanking with FreeSync, so it seems to be an issue with this GPU/monitor combo.

Ohh i will have to try this. What do you change the Refresh to / from? or does it not matter?

Yeah i’ve seen a few people with this exact issue. Didn’t have any issues with my 6900XT or my RX6800

Better just to disable VRR all together. Not what you wanted I know, but the blanking issue has existed since day one for the matte version.

Hope the AMD issues get sorted - sounds like you’re much worse off than Nvidia owners.

I was not. I was originally on a 6800xt but then upgraded to a 3090 and noticed the problem still persisted on the HDMI port (both ports have this issue). The black screen wasn’t an issue as much on the DP, but unfortunately its happening more so now on my 3090 so thats not good as the problem might be getting worse for me.

For me i got screen blanking with or w/o freesync on. Some people can fix it w/ FS disabled it seems.

Its probably the monitor though, not the AMD card because i had the same issue on this monitor w/ a different 7900 xtx card. The issue didnt seem to be present on my FI32U gigabyte monitor. I didnt use it for very long, so id have to test it longer to see if the problem comes back but i used it for about a 1/2 hour with no problems. The EVE 4k instantly black screens and repeats it constantly every 5-10 seconds. I think the EVE as a sink device has some issues over DP for some people.

Oh, absolutely it is the monitor. But have not heard many with the issue that they could not get the blanking to stop by disabling HDR and VRR on the monitor.
Hope you get a solution!

Ill try it again and see w/ the new bios maybe that fixed it.

I have this too and the monitor in this choppy mode is skipping half of the frames so its actually running at 72Hz even though it says everywhere it’s running 144Hz. I fixed this by using larger vertical blank in custom resolution. My setup is Win 11 Nvidia 4000 series and HDMI 2.1 VRR so I’m not sure if it works for other hardware.
customreso

what tool is this? CRU? or is this from the Nvidia control panel? Keen to try this, for whatever reason can’t set custom resolutions in AMD adrenaline as gpixel clock is too high (despite it being default)

Have you tried updating the monitor bios? I did do that a day ago and strangely enough ive been on HDMI for over a day w/ no problems anymore. I had to reset the monitor back to factory defaults. And i toggled gsync off and on. Hopefully it will be better, but im not holding my breath. Ill let you know if anything starts again.

Have you tried updating the monitor bios?

I updated it over the weekend, the monitor overall feels better. Still getting tis choppy issue, but thankfully its less frequent post update.

Screenshot is from nvidia control panel but I’m now using CRU to do it as it’s alot less buggy.

Current setup, (note for NVIDIA, you need to have 2 bytes free in CTA-861 so delete 2 TV resolutions in it):
